Community Needs Assessment

No one community is comprised of identical demographics, and because of this it is essential that a library understands the makeup of their community and its needs. This group project completed with four other students uses census data, extrapolated circulation data, and mock interviews and focus studies to determine how best to address Prince William Public Library’s (PWPL) community needs and ways to enhance patrons enjoyment of PWPL services.

II.c. Students understand and use appropriate information technology for information services.

Special Collections Exhibition: LGBTQ Comics from the 1930s to Today

Having worked in the curatorial department of an art museum years prior, and simultaneously working at the Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library (SNMAL) when this digital exhibition was created, this particular assignment was my favorite to complete in the MLIS program. By utilizing the SNMAL comics collection, I created an overview exhibition of how LGBTQ+ topics and ideas have been present within comics for nearly a century and the immense amount of progress towards acceptance that has happened.

LibGuide - Tarot: History, Important Texts, & Educational Materials

A way to effectively communicate and teach a new topic without the need for in-person or live teaching is through the use of a LibGuide. In this class, I created this guide about a topic that I personally find fascinating, and it allows for self-directed navigation through the many elements about this topic to learn at a person’s own pace. Contained within are several links to information sources and various ways of approaching the realm of tarot’s history, important texts, and materials that can be consulted for further in-depth study.

Grant Proposal to enhance and publish SNMAL’s archives catalog

There is no denying technology’s incredible influence on the library industry and how patrons are able to interact with collections. Due to SNMAL’s independent organizational structure and tight budget, the archive’s records management system (RMS) has never been made publicly accessible. In order to bring SNMAL’s archives into the 21st century and provide access to the archives catalog on a global scale, I created this proposal written for the IMLS Inspire! Grants for Small Museums to receive funding to rectify records issues, weed redundant or unnecessary records, and enhance the PastPerfect RMS for online publishing.

II.b. Students evaluate and select print and digital information resources and systems to meet needs of users.

LIS 6511: Collection Development and Maintenance

Collection Development Policy

This collection development policy was created with four other students to learn how to create such a policy, ways of determining how to establish and implement selection criteria, the creation of essential elements, and why having a collection development policy is integral to successful libraries.
